Content Marketing Basics: 7 steps for writing your content strategy

Let’s be honest, the world of marketing is anything but basic. In our changing digital world, content marketing can seem more complex than ever. The trick is to put an easy, repeatable process in place so you can spend less time questioning and more time creating.

In this blog, you’ll find the 7 essential steps for writing a strategy that will make your content marketing both efficient and effective.

Let’s get started!

First things first: why do you need a strategy?

Because beginning a content marketing campaign without a strategy is like driving around a new City without a map: frustrating, directionless, and a total waste of time. Putting a strategy in place will help you get crystal clear on what you are creating, who you are creating it for, and what the impact will be.

7 Things you want to focus on as you’re writing up your strategy:

  1. Know your audiencewho are you creating content for? Do your research on your client – dive into their world so you not only understand their industry, but so you can speak in their language and create content in a way that is aligned to their needs and interests. Your number one goal should always be to demonstrate value to your audience, so you need to understand what is considered valuable to them.

  2. Determine your goals –  Set some S.M.A.R.T (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound) goals for your content. What are you ultimately trying to achieve, which tools and tactics will best get you there, and how will you know when you’ve achieved it? Write those down so you have a guide to keep you focused and accountable.

  3. Decide on your platforms – There are many platforms to deliver content through: social media, websites, blogs, emails –  you’ll want to figure out the best outlets to reach your target audience and how you need to tweak your content to appeal to your audience on each platform.

  4. Create a content calendar – Take some time to plan out your content for the month ahead. Is there a theme for the month? Is there an event or product launch you’re promoting? Brainstorm the content you want to create for the month ahead that will strategically serve your audience. Then look at how you will deliver that content across your platforms. It sounds a bit tedious, but when you’re looking at that calendar at a glance, you’ll take the guesswork out of what comes next and you can focus strictly on creating.

  5. Develop customer-centric content – Now for the fun part: create your content! Remember to keep your customer at the centre of your messaging. One of the biggest goals with content marketing is to build brand awareness and, more importantly, TRUST.  You want the customer to know that you understand their needs and you’re there to support them.

  6. Schedule your content – We can’t be online 24 hours a day. Scheduling content to go out at a specific date and time is a true time-saver. You can focus on creating and building your business while your content delivers itself. Efficiency at its finest. There are many great apps out there so do some research to find the ones that work best for you.

  7. Evaluate your work – After you put your content out into the world, you want to be sure that it’s making the impact necessary to reach your goals. Always evaluate and track your performance, whether that’s monthly, quarterly or annually, so you can tweak your strategy as necessary.

Happy strategizing!
